Not being strictly related, it might be of some value to know that ABCL 1.0.1 fails with a similar error while loading some systems (not the testsuite; I noticed ironclad) because of a bug in a CLOS implementation which prevented %component-encoding from appearing in some components, but which was fixed in 1.1.0-dev (so I didn't try to find when it was fixed).
