you have to check whether searchd is running. if not you'll receive that error
message.
in
an older version of aspseek (not sure whether it was solved in 1.2.7)
searchd
crashed often on my suse-linux box.

[aseek-users] aclocal
Hi there!
1. Is there any way to install Aspseek
1.2.8 (cvs version) without aclocal or
with aclocal installed in my own
directory --> (./aclocal)
2. I'm having problems using aspseek
1.2.7 many times (I don't know why) when I try to search it returns
Cannot connect so search daemon. Is that because the web
server was restarted?
