Look into Apache's error_log, or enable CGI debugging
(see http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_cgi.html#cgi_debug).
s.cgi from 1.2.10 has a bug: if it can't connect to searchd
within a timeout (2 seconds), it just exits without displaying
a proper error message. This bug does not affect normal operation
(when searchd is up-n-running), but this may be your case.
1.2.11pre fixes that.
