I use a simple crontab. In Debian (in Red Hat is the same):

edit the master crontab as root

vi /etc/crontab

and add this line:

0 10 * * * aspseek /usr/sbin/index -r /dev/null

This crontab starts the index every morning at 10 AM. In place of /usr/sbin/index use the path that points to your index file.
