[ASN.1] asn.1 ...how did it evlove ???

any idea how did asn.1 evolve...
according to my information....some guy wanted to represent the MIB's of SNMP so he 
started out with asn.1 and then it gradually went on to be used for other protocols 
too........is that true ??? and is asn.1 really the best solution we can have.  

i have even heard some talk about asn.2 ??? and idea on that ???
