Yes, it does require 90-120VAC to power the backlight. Most LCD's are like that. There are some though that will operate using different power levels, such as 12VDC or even less. You will want to look specifically for an LCD Display with a _LED_ backlight as all EL (Electroluminescent) backlights will be similar to those we sell.
Alternately, as most people who use LCD's in general already know, it is relatively easy to make a little inverter circuit to power the EL backlight from 5-12VDC, and that's the way most people who use them do it. Or you can purchase such an inverter for a modest amount-- typically $10-20 USD but we ourselves no longer carry them as our supplier quit making them. You might try JameCo (http://www.jameco.com). There is a ton of LCD related information on my website: www.wizard.org, look on the left side of the page, partway down for the "LCD Reference" link and go there. You will find all that you are looking for. If, after all this, you decide that you don't want the LCD's, that's fine- just please send me and email to let me know so I can put these back up for sale again.
