  MSDE is basically SQL Server without the client tools etc... and if
  you're using it as a back-end for a web-based system, then the only
  machine accessing the data is the webserver itself, so the clients won't
  need anything installed unless they wish to access the database
  directly, bypassing the web interface.

  I have been thinking about using MSDE for my Web-based
  document-production system. However, I've done some quick research, and
  based on what I know so far, it appears that it's necessary to install a
  component of some kind on each client machine. If so, MSDE probably is
  not the right technology for my system, since my users are not in an
  environment that is under my control; instead, my users can be anywhere
  in a world using virtually any kind of computer and browser. 

  Does anyone here know if in fact it is necessary to install something on
  each client machine in order to use MSDE?
