Kevin,
        I should've mentioned that I was regenerating with automake-1.9.6,
as opposed to 1.10, which seems to be what you're using.  According to
1.10's release notes, wild-card expansion has been implemented in certain
contexts (they mention aclocal explicitly).  If it works for you in
EXTRA_DIST, then you may ignore those parts of the patch, as I don't have
1.10 handy.  Sorry for the noise.
