Application variables need to be handled carefully.

http://learnasp.com/learn/sessionsapps.asp
explains them -- they have not changed much from Classic ASP. Don't
forget about locking if incrementing them.

To see if you are in a  directory figure it out from the server
variables but I have to ask what you are attempting to do. There may
be better ways to achieve what you want,
