My bet is that you have rows where there are NULL values in the AM column. These will show up first when you initially sort on the column. If you have paging on and a sufficient number of rows, the rows that appear may all have NULL in the column. Click on the heading again and see if you have values. Your sort code is a little over-complicated but it looks like it should work.
