look at: http://www.learnasp.com/freebook/learn/cs_searcher.aspx (C#) or http://www.learnasp.com/freebook/learn/searchertypical.aspx (VB.net) and notice particularly the use of isPostback to only bind once, so the selection does not get wiped out from binding.
