My best advice is to buy one. There are a number of solid grids out there that will provide you with much more functionality and reliability for a relatively low cost.
Even at a $1000 for a license, and valuing your time at $25/hour, that's only 40 hours of development time before your home-rolled solution gets more expensive than a working third-party package. If you are planning on going into the control business and investing 6-12 months to develop a product that's one thing, but if you just need a grid control for a project, there is no way you can put together a superior home-rolled control in 40 hours.
