It depends usually reading from disk files is faster.

But DBMS systems can cache data in memory then thats faster if it's a local 
DB.

Fastest is always to read from server cache.
Fastest next to that from local file.
Grouping up all the text file into 1 text file will probably be faster if 
you need the data all at once.

But databases are usally the best choice for maintanability.
