Sure, I use Microsoft Messaging Queues to establish the message delivery. The messaging queues act similar to email message in theory. A server side component would listen to message queue and based on the message information deliver the message to the appropriate client. I don't know what jabber is, and The Hartford blocks that site so I don't know what it is. I wrote an applet based chat system once for a client and it was a nightmare due to security.
