The easier way si to just wire a button to an event. Look at:

is a C# sample of what I mean. See how buttons got attached to events?

http://www.learnasp.com/freebook/learn/pageeventmodel.aspx
is a VB.net version of the same.

If you don't want to use ASP:button you can add a onserverclick event to a 
HTML button and add runat=server /> to that button to get it to wire into an 
event.
