NDA Convenor George Fernandes on Tuesday accused both the Centre and Assam Government of being not sincere on the matter of proposed talks with ULFA.

The Centre and the State do not seem to be sincere about the recent initiative by the ULFA and certain individuals for negotiation, Fernandes said at a press conference in New Delhi.

The NDA leader, who was on a two-day visit to the State, however, said it was a 'welcome sign' that the ULFA had evinced desire to sit for talks with the Government.

Fernandes favoured declaration of ceasefire before any such talks as a peaceful atmosphere was needed.

Fearing that the ruling Congress would indulge in large scale rigging and violence in next year's Assembly elections in Assam, the former Defence Minister said the anti-Congress opposition parties to unite and remain alert to thwart such efforts.

The NDA, he said, was in favour of having electoral adjustments with the Asom Gana Parishad but a final decision was yet to be taken.
