Govt comes out
with State cultural policy
By a Staff
Reporter GUWAHATI, Jan 3:
To promote and preserve the distinct
cultural identity of different tribes and communities of the State, and to
develop the entertainment industry, the State Government today announced its
cultural policy to be implemented by the Directorate of Cultural Affairs,
Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, Jyoti Chitraban Film Society, the
Directorate of Library Services, the Department of Archaeology and Assam
State Museum.
Talking to newspersons in the
city today, Cultural Minister Hemoprava Saikia said that the policy
would promote the culture of the ethnic and indigenous tribes and
communities of the State.
It may be mentioned here that
the policy envisages to preserve the ancient monuments and historical sites
of the State.
As an endeavour towards
preservation and development of the religious sites, a high-power committee,
headed by Additional Chief Secretary CK Das, would study the condition of
the Xatras and Devalayas across the State, and submit a report
to the government suggesting various measures. This information was divulged
by Mrinal Kumar Barua, Commissioner-Secretary, Department of Culture, who
was also present at the interactive session.
Baruah further said that around
800 Xatras and Devalayas in the State are in dilapidated
condition, and require immediate renovation.
The Government has released Rs
25 lakh each for Barpeta, Madhupur and Bordowa Xatra towards their
development and maintenance.
On the other hand, to encourage
film production in the State, the Government has decided to refund 80 per
cent of the amusement tax to the producers, and to deposit 20 per cent in
the corpus fund of Assam Film Finance and Development
Corporation.
For promoting a library
movement, the cultural policy envisages strengthening of the rural library
network and other village libraries for promoting reading habit of the
people. According to the minister, the government has already released Rs 8
crore towards boosting the library movement in the
State.
The minister further informed
that the 300 capacity air conditioned auditorium at Kalakshetra would
be inaugurated on January 17, 2006, and that the first phase of work of the
children amusement park (Sishubon) here, was completed.
