OIL chief appointment: AASU intensifies stir
From Our Correspondent
DULIAJAN, Jan 9 – The agitation spearheaded by AASU in protest against the appointment of a non-local person in the top post of the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Oil India Ltd (OIL) is gaining momentum with today’s sit-in demonstration being participated by more than 5000 people from all over the Dibrugarh district in front of OIL’s operational headquarter’s administrative office at Duliajan. Today, as the second phase of agitation protesting the appointment of MR Pasrija as the next CMD being headed by Dibrugarh District and Duliajan unit of AASU, more than 5000 people gathered at Duliajan for a sit-in demonstration from 11 am to 2 pm. Today’s demonstration was being participated by Samujjal Bhattacharyya, adviser AASU, Sankar Prasad Rai, Tapan Gogoi, president and general secretary of AASU respectively besides representatives of Gorkha Students’ Union, Chutia Students’ Union, Tai Ahom Students’ Union, Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, Mising Students’ Union, AATTSA, Sonowal Kachari Students’ Union, Asom Sena, Asom Unnati Sabha, Duliajan Nari Aikya Mancha, Duliajan Nagarik Samiti, AGP, Indian Oil Workers’ Union (IOWU) and others.

It may be mentioned that the recognised workers’ union of OIL, IOWU has taken part in the demonstration gives a new dimension to the agitational programme launched by AASU. As this Union itself had earlier called on Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Mani Sankar Aiyar to appoint VK Sibal, the present director general of Hydro-carbon of India as the next CMD of OIL which was turned down by the minister.

Samujjal Bhattacharyya during his speech said that as the appointment to the top post of OIL being a political appointment, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi should have strongly advocated for an able local technocraft for the top post. It is the failure on the part of State and Union Governments to honour the sentiments of the people of the State, Bhattacharyya said.
