PCI asks for deregistration for a week four Assamese dailies
New Delhi, Feb 24 : Press Council of India has asked for deregistrastion for a week of four Assamese newspapers holding them guilty of "impropriety and unethical conduct grave enough" for such an action in a case filed by a woman.
The Council, which met recently under the Chairmanship of Justice G N Ray, held that "Agradoot", "Aaji", "Assamia Khabar" and Amar Asom, Guwahati had "flouted the very basic tenets of journalism" in the reports on the complainant, Swarnali Brohmo Choudhary.
"In an age, when universally an attempt is being made for empowerment of women, particulary those from under developed areas, the reports such as these, tend to deflect and undo by stigmatising women who need to interact with their male colleagues", it observed.
The Council has decided to send its opinion in the case to the Union Government "for such action as may be deemed fit by it".
In separate complaints it also censured "Swatantra Chetna", a hindi daily published from Gorakhpur, Amar Ujala from Bareilly, Chhatarpur Bhraman from Madhya Pradesh and Times of India, Bangalore. The Times was censured in a complaint filed by M S Zahed, Chairman and Managing Director of HMT ltd, Bangalore.
