It seems financial independence for women is more of a concern in poor countries -- the creamy layer in rich countries prefer to be stay-at-home.(As seen in the CNN reprot: Mommy Wars.)  Ofcourse, they can always start working since most are educated. Though, in 2004  even a Stanford Law graduate prefered to become a call-girl rather than pursue the legal profession -as was reported in a Harvard Law student newspaper then. However, such must be rare very rare exceptions -- generally poorer people would prefer to earn by using their skills learned at college/school.
