A week before the last round of talks between the Peoples Consultative Group (PCG) and the Centre, pressure is building upon the Union Home Ministry to release ULFA's central Committee members.
In return the ULFA says it will talk directly with the Centre.
"The signs are positive. National Security Advisor M K Narayanan is very positive. The third round is crucial and I hope the ULFA comes forward for talks," said Indira Goswami, Member, PCG.
Security warning
Security experts however, have cautioned against releasing the prisoners.
"Prisoners should not be released. There has been no development work in Assam for the last 50 years. Ensure development and insurgency is going to disappear," said E N Rammohan, Member NSAB, Former DG BSF.
Security agencies point out that ULFA has gone back on a peace agreement in 1991.
- They claim ULFA's peace-bid is only to buy time.
- Paresh Baruah is too close to the ISI and is unlikely to appear for talks.
- He is more likely to send the Released Central Committee members for talks.
- ULFA is behind the recent spate of bomb attacks in Assam.
- The outfit has lost support in the state.
The Union Home Ministry finds itself walking a tightrope with the Congress led Assam government pushing for the release.
With just about a week left before the Centre engages the PCG for the crucial third round of talks, the Union Home Ministry is undecided on the release of ULFA prisoners.
