GUWAHATI: The Congress said that the ULFA should positively respond to the central government's initiative for talks.

Addressing a press conference here, AICC spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said that the UPA government had taken the initiative to bring all alienated groups to the talks table.

"We have started an indepth discussion to bring the ULFA to the negotiation table, but a positive response is required from the ULFA," Singhvi said.

He said that Assam was on the threshold of progress because it is the focus of all major initiatives taken by the Congress-led government at the Centre.

The Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government in the state has a historic opportunity to not only take Assam on par with other developed states but converting it into a model state.

On the perennial flood problem, Singhvi said that flood control measures needed to be developed to mitigate the suffering of the people.

Asked to comment on the hike in fuel prices, the Congress leader said that it was inevitable due to the rise in international prices but the party has approached the states to minimise the hike by reducing the rate of state level sales tax.
