Drought threat to Assam rhinos

One-horn rhinoceroses in the Kaziranga National Park, in Assam, northeast India, are threatened by a food shortage caused by a severe dry spell. Utpal Bora, the warden, said: “The impact of the near-drought will be felt in the winter, when most of the grazing animals in Kaziranga are surely going to face a food crisis.” The park is home to 1,855 one-horn rhinos. There are only 2,700 worldwide. Rangers fear that the rhinos may stray and be exposed to poachers. (AFP)
