<But what do you do in the present scenario?>
If your new ones (born outside Assam) have to go to non-Assamese schools--try teaching them Assamese at home-'riting/reading- so that they are in control of speech and literacy later.
If you live in Assam, there should be no problem--evenyour child goes to true-blue"English Schools". There they speak only in Assamese-English.If you are farsighted parentsyou will teach them Assamese quietly.
If Oxom Government becomes potent and goes into Action-Mode - the first time ever, they would do these(and many more):
- Working in: Farming/Plantation/Vetcare/Bricklaying/electrics/Optical/rivercraft compulsory150 days/year- for 13-18 year age group-ALL. Degree or not, they will have assignments ready at 20 anywhere worldwide on contract.
- Make speaking/writing/reading in languages English/ Russian/Mandarin/Thai/Farsi/Arabic for a whole school system of one allotted town like Dhubri-Goalpara-Doom Dooma-Jonai-Patharkandi -Udalguri .At 20+ they will be Exported to those Language nations withgeneral skills or to handle incoming tourism from those-speaking nations.
- Make High-grade Athletic training the main learning object at another set of targetted locations like Kokrajhar-Football; Lakhimpur-Volleyball;Track&field--Haflong;Aquatics-Guahati
- Make Paramedics/Nursing/Nannying/Aged- Care the main focus for Lakhs 14to18years in Bodolands/Mirilands/Nagalands in Assam.Idea is to make Assam the ideal Retirement paradise.

With English medium education virtually the norm rather than an
exception proficiency in one's Mother tongue has suffered irreparably.
Very rarely one would opt for a vernacular school even in smaller
towns. While the importance of English is not disputed what is
alarming is the neglect of the mother tongue.
Can one be as proficient in his Mother tongue if the medium of
instruction in schools is English?
Students of vernacular schools however can master the English language
as they go for higher education. At least our elders did.
Not able to read/write one's mother tongue cannot be a matter of
pride. This trend must be arrested and the effort must start at each
