Very true.
The 'intelligentsia' is not the whole of the citizenry, neither it is a
monolith. There are divers vested interests in that'intelligentsia'.
Of those divers parts, only those representing the interests and aspirations
of the local rulers may meet with some success in making the Delhi rulers
espouse their cause to the extent such yearnings do not run counter to the big
brothers' agenda. However, they seem to have no acumen to carry the people with
them, and limit themselves to a little blackmail here and there, and a wee bit
of intrigues in the corridors of power.
Even in such efforts, our so called 'intelligentsia' or part thereof have
been found lacking.
Mr. Kanak Sen Deka has inferred from the number of violence related deaths in
Assam that it holds great promise for Oxomiya literature, because, it indicates
an infusion of variety into the social life of Assam. He quoted Amartya Sen's
statistics that RIO in Brazil has maximum number of violent deaths per thousand
persons. From this he has concluded that life in Latin America has variety and
hence the emergence of great writers like Gabriel Garcia et al.( His
Presidential speech in a meeting to inaugurate Dr. Jyotsna Bhattacharjee's book
'Dear Mother' on 26/08/2007)
Taking a cue from him, may we also infer that our 'intelligentsia'
representing local rulers would perk up and become cheeky with the increase in
the number of local persons coming into money( ends justify means), going
places, realising more than ever the fact that govt. job & petty contracts
(read offals) are not the goal in life etc., and therefore, cease to be myopic
and lethargic for their own good and try to achieve some cohesion in its
actions, political as well as economic?

*** That is a function of how the citizenry , which would be your
'intelligentsia' responds, if at all. During recent years, the
'intelligentsia's' creativity and imagination has been on vacation and were
consumed by 'security' and jingoist rants.
And for the intelligentsia to discuss and debate them and generate an
informed public opinion they need exposure. I am not always up to snuff on what
Assamedia chooses to air and what it is either too afraid to or are unwilling
to air. The only exposure so far that I am aware of was thru a Kolkata tabloid.
For all practical purposes, desi-media's attention or absence of it regarding
Assam issues will ultimately fall into deaf ears, if not snuffed out by the
sekurity-wallas in Delhi who hold the powers over desi political imaginations
as far as our region is concerned..

Dear Baruah:
Read the book on one sitting. It was an almost unprecedented
accomplishment for me, since I left college. I found it extremely
informative, as always. I was particularly impressed by your
realistic analysis of the unsustainable two-tiered citizenship, of
the ethnic homeland model and the proposal of for citizenship of
India as well as a state. Most of all, for me, it is the first
comprehensive attempt at finding an attainable and sustainable
resolution of these indigenous/immigrant conflicts that have so riven
Assam and the other 'states' around it. In that it stands out from
the xenophobic cacophony that has dominated the discourse not only in
Assam but has even spilled over to assamnet.
Big question however is if the powers that be will pay any heed?
Best.
