TCS investment in IT likely
By our Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Aug 30: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of the major software
giants of the country, may come forward with a huge investment plan in IT
sector in Asom. An announcement in this regard is likely tomorrow, sources
said.
Such an indication was given by Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam
Ramesh today. TCS Chief Executive Officer Ramdurai, along with a high-level
team, is scheduled to arrive in the city tomorrow, and is supposed to hold a
meeting with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, the Union Minister said during the
inaugural session of the two-day NICT meet currently under way in the city.
He said the TCS is likely to come forward with huge investment in IT sector in
Asom. However, the minister said too much security concern in the North-east
has been destroying its prospects in IT sector.
He said the North-east should concentrate on East and South East Asian
countries for expected development and collaboration in IT sector. According
to him, the centre of gravity in IT sector is changing, it is shifting to the
East and South East Asian regions and the North-east India should grab this
opportunity.
The minister said the North-east is currently at IT application level, and in
the next six years or so it will reach at IT development level like Bangalore
and Hyderabad. He proposed to make Guwahati and Shillong as IT hubs in the
region, since these two cities have the necessary educational infrastructure
and command over English. You should market your cities to the IT world,
following the example of Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata, he said.
However, the Union Minister said domestic application of IT in India is very
low, which stands at about 25 per cent.
He said BSNL has so far given 11,500 broad band connections, despite its
capacity of giving 21,000 connections in the North-east. The BSNL has decided
to provide 90,000 additional broad band connections to this region next year,
he added.
