UNESCO team to visit Manas from tomorrow

 BARPETA, Feb 11 – A team from UNESCO will visit the Manas National Park with a 
three-day programme commencing from February 13. It is learnt that the main 
purpose of the team is to collect information about the problems faced by the 
world famous park amidst reports of poaching and destruction of its flora and 
fauna.

The team will consists of Guy Davanet, Programme Specialist of Natural Heritage 
of UNESCO based in Paris, Haen Lathier and Prof Rambhuj, both monitoring 
officers of Delhi-based World Heritage and SK Sribastav Chief Conservator of 
Forest, Jaipur.

Declared as the World Heritage Site by the UNESCO, Manas acquired the status of 
a reserved forest in 1928 and was included in the map of tiger sanctuaries way 
back in 1974. In 1990, it was declared a National Park. Later in the Nineties, 
it faced threats from several anti-social elements following which it had to be 
declared as ‘World Heritage Site in Danger’.

The visit of the UNESCO team has created optimism as it will submit a report 
after studying all aspects, including infrastructure, communication and 
security measures, etc.

Bihu workshop: ‘Bordoichila’, a forerunner in the field of Bihu dance of Lower 
Assam, organised a workshop on the national festival of the Assamese people.

The two-day workshop was conducted by Prabin Saikia known as the guru of 
folk-song in Barpeta Road Sahitya Sabha Bhawan on February 2 and 3.

Altogether 85 trainees from various parts of Lower Assam, such as Rangiya, 
Nalbari, Howly, Barpeta, Manikpur, Sarbhog, Barpeta Road, participated in the 
workshop to train themselves with Bihu Geet and the choreography related with 
Bihu dance.

An open meeting was held at the end of the workshop with Nareswar Das in the 
chair. Prof Phulkumari Kalita dwelt at length on the several aspects of folk 
culture in the meeting. Sunil Das and Jayanta Das from Bordoichila also took 
part in the deliberation.

Participants in the workshop were awarded certificates besides felicitation to 
the trainers. Prabin Saikia was well assisted by his wife Rashmirekha Saikia, 
Jali Bora and Lakshya Gogoin during the course of the workshop.
