Call to work for women empowerment

 GUWAHATI, March 8 – On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Chief 
Minister Tarun Gogoi today formally inaugurated the Rural Women Empowerment 
Scheme at a programme organised by the Assam State Women’s Commission in 
collaboration with the National Women’s Commission at Rabindra Bhawan. Speaking 
on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that for overall development of the 
society, women must be educated and empowered. 

“Women empowerment is possible only after eradicating all forms of inequalities 
between men and women. Women largely participating in the panchayat elections 
and playing active role at different administrative levels is a positive 
development towards empowerment,” he said.

Gogoi further added along with taking initiatives for the socio-economic 
development of rural women of the State, a special cell would also be 
constituted in the police department in order to check crime against women. 
“Talks are also afoot to start a women university in the State,” he said. 

Mridula Saharia, chairperson of the State Women Commission also spoke on the 
occasion. 

Women’s Day was celebrated by Prochesta, in collaboration with the Gyan Vigyan 
Society, Assam and State Resource Centre, Assam at Shilpagram in the city. 

Prajapita Brahma Kumari Iswariya Vishwa Vidyalaya also celebrated International 
Women’s Day and brought out a peace procession from Dighali Pukhuri, Shanti 
Udyan on the occasion. The GNRC conducted free health check-ups for women on 
the occasion. 

The Brihattar Noonmati Nari Niryatan Virodhi Oikya Mancha, a united forum of 68 
women committees of East Guwahati observed the day with various programmes at 
Noonmati. 

A two-day programme has also been initiated on the occasion at NEDFi Haat, 
Ambari by the Directorate of Social Welfare, which was inaugurated today by 
Social Welfare Minister Ajanta Neog. “In the programme, women related issues 
like domestic violence, child abuse, eve teasing, trafficking and women 
empowerment were discussed,” said Anu Das, Deputy Director, Social Welfare 
Department. North East Network and Assam Mahila Samata Society celebrated the 
day at Srimanta Sankerdev Kalaksherta today. The programme was addressed by Dr 
Syeda Hameed member of the Planning Commission.
