For how long shall Asom be ignored, Sonowal to Centre

>From our Correspondent
NEW DELHI, April 3: Despite strong demands from the Brahmaputra and Barak
valleys of Asom, not a single IIM and IIT has been sanctioned by the Union
Ministry of Human Resource Development in the 11th five year plan, while it
announced the setting up of four IITs and six IIMs all over the country.
Expressing strong resentment for not sanctioning even a single IIM and IIT,
Asom Gana Parishad MP Sarbananda Sowonal said, “It is a matter of extreme
disappointment”.
Talking to this correspondent, Sonowal said, “Regarding the setting up of an
IIM in both valleys in Asom, we urged the Union HRD Minister and we even raised
this demand in Parliament several times. But in vain. This is not a new thing.
The Union Government has intentionally let down our demand.”
Sonowal also mentioned that the announcement of setting up of an IIM at
Shillong was not a case of fulfilment for Asom and other parts of the
North-east.
He also said that though the Central Government had set up the first oil
refinery in Digboi in Asom, but the UPA Government gave the green signal to set
up the Rajiv Gandhi National Petroleum Technology Institute in Uttar Pradesh.
“For how long shall we be ignored?”, the AGP MP questioned.
