Great news!

Look forward to see a cleaner Guwahati after the problem is recognized, and
steps to resolve it is taken up by the government. They have done good with the
fly-overs, Nehru park(?) etc., so we can take an optimistic approach.

Journalists to study garbage management in GuwahatiDear friends, Here is a news
item for your information. Regards, Nava Thakuria, Secretary, Guwahati Press
Club, Guwahati-781001 Journalists to study garbage management in Guwahati
Guwahati: Guwahati Press Club has decided to study the problem of
garbagemanagement in the largest city of Northeast with special reference
tobio-medical wastes. This is a known fact that Guwahati, the crowded
cityhouses nearly 20,00,000 residents and the city produces hundred thousand
kgsof garbage everyday. More over, the city has emerged as a health care
hubfor the state as well as for the seven neighbouring states serving more
thanthree crore people. One can easily imagine the quantity of
hazardousbio-medical wastes that the hospitals and pathological labs produce in
asingle day. But unfortunately enough, the city does not have an adequate
modern systemto deal with the situation. Though the Ministry of Environment and
Forests(GoI) issued Municipal Wastes (Management & Handling) Rules in 2000,
thepresent state of garbage management system in Guwahati is not able tocope-up
with the need of the time. The study will cover all aspects of garbage
management in the city. A groupof journalists will take the initiative and
finally compile a comprehensivereport in English on the issue. Interested
journalists (must be Guwahatibased), are requested to contact the secretary,
Guwahati Press Club (e-mail:[EMAIL PROTECTED]) on or before May 31, 2008.
