Assam BJP Candidates In Desperate Crimes
Ramen
Barua, the person arrested from the residence of an MP in Delhi while
trying to extort money in the name of the ULFA, has been identified as
Ranjan Bikash Borgohain, who was the BJP candidate from the Tingkhong
legislative assembly constituency during the last Assembly polls in
Assam. He was arrested from Dhubri MP Anowar Hussain’s New Delhi
residence on saturday by the Delhi Police.
Meanwhile
another BJP candidate Anamika Barua was yesterday arrested by the
Tezpur police on charges of dacoity. Anamika was the BJP candidate from
the prestigious Tezpur assembly constituency during the last assembly
elections held in 2006. She has been accused of snatching Rs. 55,000
from a business establishment along with four armed accomplices.
Another youth and the vehicle used for the dacoity are also in police
custody.

1000 Hour Bandh To Choke Northeast
A
marathon 1000 hour bandh called by the All Koch Rajbongshi Students
Union that started yesterday might choke essential supplyies to the
entire northeastern region. The bandh has been called by the Biswajit
Roy faction of the AKRSU in support of their demand for carving out a
separate state called Kamatipur out of parts of North Bengal and Assam.
Although no untoward incident or violence was reported from anywhere,
movement of commercial vehicles was severely restricted. Buses and
trucks plying between West Bengal and Assam, bringing in essential
supplies to the northeast, were stranded on the West Bengal side of the
border. Police arrested several hundred picketeers trying to enforce
the bandh from the Lower Assam states.

ULFA Rules Out Talks
In
an statement released to the media, the ULFA has categorically ruled
out peace talks with the government of India, thereby pouring cold
water on the recent efforts by a few (now expelled) ULFA leaders to
mobilise public opinion to force the top leadership of the outfit to
sit for peace talks. The statement signed by publicity wing member
Ranjan Barthakur, also accused the pro-talk leaders led by Mrinal
Hazarika of trying to create an uprising against the ULFA leadership
and malign the image of the outfit. In referance to a recent remark by
Hazarika that the top leadership would fade away like Phizo if they
refused to sit for peace talks, the statement mentioned that A.Z.Phizo
never sat for peace talks or compromised his position and he remained
an inspiration in Nagaland and the entire Northeast. The Ulfa would
rather be like Phizo than like Laldenga, the statement said, refering
to the former Mizo National Front leader who went on to become the
Chief Minister of Mizoram after coming overground.

Cabinet Team For Fact Finding Mission To BTAD
The
Assam government has constituted a high powered team of cabinet
ministers to tour the Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD) next
week to find out the reasons for the deteriorating law and order
situation and suggest measures to restote normalcy. The cabinet
committee comprises Himanta Biswa Sarma, Rockybul Hussain, Rihan
Daimary, Chandan Brahma and Pramila Rani Brahma and they are scheduled
to visit the headquarters of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) at
Kokrajhar on saturday. This move comes after pressure from opposition
parties during the recent monsoon session of the Assembly on the
situation in the BTAD where over 50 people have died in clashes between
the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) cadres and the ex
Bodoland Liberation Tigers (BLT) this year. While the NDFB is in a
ceasefire agreement with the government of India, the BLT was disbanded
after the Bodo Accord and its leaders are now in the Bodo Peoples Front
(BPF), the ruling party in the BTC and partner of the Tarun Gogoi led
Congress government of Assam.

two-day reconstituted State Executive Committee meet of the All Assam
Journalists’ Union (AAJU) held at Kahara in Golaghat district on July
12 and 13 urged the Central Government to sanction Rs 1000 crore for
the all-round development of the Kaziranga National Park. The

Congress Wooing Naga MPs Congress
leaders in Manipur and Nagaland have been urging Independent Naga MP,
Mani Cheranamei of Manipur and Nagaland People’s Front MP Wangyuh
Konyak to support the UPA at Centre during the trust vote on July 22 in
Parliament.

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee is
making all out efforts to get Mani Cheranamei’s vote. But it seems he
is looking for a deal prior to the trust vote as he recently told the
media that he would decide on whether to oppose or support the UPA
Government during the trust vote only after the Congress made its stand
clear on the Naga issue.

Nagaland PCC chief Hokheto Sumi has also requested the ruling Nagaland
People’s Front to keep aside petty differences in political ideology
and support the UPA Government in the crucial vote.
