DUBAI: An Indian couple from Kerala, who came on a visit visa to the UAE and later entered Oman illegally, was arrested during a raid and deported to the Emirates, police said.

The couple had reached Buraimi area of Oman through the Rowdha-Madham-Mahala route to visit their relatives and was arrested on Sunday in a raid, local media said, quoting police.

The names of the couple were, however, not disclosed. The couple had come to the UAE last week and went to Oman on a one-day visit to meet their relatives, the Times of Oman reported. They were later deported to the UAE.

The report said the Royal Oman Police had also arrested 249 other foreigners, including 32 women, for staying illegally.

The raids were carried out in cooperation with the Manpower Ministry officials. Out of the 249 arrested, 137 had violated labour laws and 112 had entered the country illegally. Last week, the Royal Oman Police had arrested 406 people in Al Khuwayr and Ghubra for violating labour and residency laws.

"Those arrested are of Asian nationalities, 375 of whom have violated labour laws. The remaining 31 include domestic helps who have absconded from their employers' homes and those living in the country without the requisite documents," a statement had said.

The authorities have urged all people to abide by the laws on employment and residency
