Hopping between islands dotted in the upper reaches of the mighty
Brahmaputra River, a team of 16 ordinary professionals are making
extraordinary contribution to the lives of hundreds of islanders by sailing
out healthcare to them. Arkadripta Chakraborty, a 28 years independent
Photographer who hails from Agartala in Tripura, and the winner of the
prestigious Habitat Centre Photography Fellowship 2013 brings us the story
of the boat clinics from Assam.

To the islands which are remote in distance and more so, in the mind space
of this vast nation.

The boat clinics conduct child delivery, immunisation of mother and child,
vaccination of pregnant women and children for malaria, pulse polio,
Japanese encephalitis, apart from regular health check ups.

The best part is, the villagers get everything under one floor—doctors,
paramedics, medicines, lab tests—all free of cost.

The islanders benefit a great deal because they do not have spend
thousands of rupees just to hire boats and reach the mainland for medical
emergencies or check-ups.

The medical team mainly focuses on reproductive healthcare, family
planning, curative care, childcare, medical and sanitation awareness.

This team of 16 people are involved in the mobile healthcare system
installed on a boat to travel across the rivers to the farthest of islands.
These units aptly termed as "Boat clinics" comprises of a boat crew along
with a medical team of doctors, nurses, paramedics and community workers.

The units are well equipped with medicines, vaccines and life-saving drugs.
