GUWAHATI, December 29: A voluntary association, Jeevan Initiative, has come up with a list of Special 10 of the Year. The list includes ten special people, creations and organizations originating from or related to Assam who have exhibited excellence in various fields and have brought laurels for the state and its people. The list includes USA–based medical Inventor Dr. Kalyan Handique, Administrative officer Dr. Oni Prakash, Organic farmer Mahan Chandra Bora, Assamese Unicode activist Dr. Banajit Pathak, Journalist Mazibur Rahman, Sound Engineer Debajit Changmai, Eco–Tourism Society of Northeast, Mobile theatre play Makaraar Poja, Manoj Sarma’s nonfiction book Natun Samaj Natun Rajniti, Jahnu Barua’s cinema Ajeyo. The list has been made public today by Suresh Ranjan Goduka, founder chief of Jeevan Initiative. The organization publishes this list annually. An lIT Mumbai alumnus with and currently the CEO of Denovo Sciences in the USA, Dr. Kalyan Handique has 50 patents to his credit. Denovo run by Kalyan Handique and Priyadarshini Gogoi has won North America’s largest business plan competition awards, the ‘Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition Award’. He had co–founded HandyLab in 2000 which launched a series of integrated molecular diagnostic products in the hospital testing market. Dr. Om Prakash, the deputy commissioner of Nalbari, has spearheaded people–centric actions and programmes which have resulted in clean and disciplined atmosphere in the district. His approach has helped revive trust in administrative setup among the people. Mahan Chandra Bora, a farmer from Meleng in Jorhat, has set up the Northeast’s first seed lending library. It is now a sister library of the California–based Richmond Grows Seed Lending Library. He has a collection of around 160 indigenous seeds. Anyone in the region can take seeds from him, provided they conserve and lend some seeds. Debajit Changmai has carved a niche for himself in Mumbai film industry. He has won laurels for his sound mixing in films like Bhag Mi!kha Bhag, Barfi etc. He is known for merging voices, location ambience, background music and other sound effects to create a near–tactile experience that is both real and artistic. He was also the sound mixing engineer of the first movie in India Featuring Dolby Surround 7.1 Dr. Banajit Pathak has been relentlessly working towards facilitating Unicode fonts and typing tools for Assamese language. He has invented Unicode fonts and been associated with popularizing it with workshops, trainings and social media platforms. Journalist Mazibur Rahman is the Nalbari Bureau of DY365. He is a social activist as well. Recently he has set up an old–age home, besides offering a helping hand to the poor and deprived sections of society. He has also unearthed a number of corruption cases in his news stories. Eco–Tourism Society of Northeast has been active in tourism promotion since 2010. They are trying to reduce the gap of tourism industry and local population. Through various innovative activities they have been attracting the new generation with tourism promotion. Manoj Sarma’s nonfiction book Natun Samaj Natun Rajniti has thrown light into various unexplored aspects of literary discourse and will prove to be a milestone in critical appreciation and literary criticism in Assamese language. Rajashri Mobile Theatre’s play Makaraar Poja, written by Mridul Chutiya has reflected social realities in the backdrop of flood, erosion and injustice. Jahnu Barua’s cinema Ajeyo based on Arun Sarma’s timeless novel Ashirbadar Rang. It has been created in an artistically–unique style of filmmaking that too with down to earth approach. It reflects social situations around the independence era and people’s survival struggle to face the situation.
