Thanks for informing us on Assam Forum of Great Britain(AFGB). We also get
periodic updatesfrom Rituraj and Dr. Jayanta B. Sarma.
I have gone through the AFGB 2014 Conference ExecutiveSummary PDF document and
would like to highlight the point ‘lowtech natural solutions to erosion by Mr.
Wahid Saleh from The Netherlands’. We, a few Non-resident Assamese havebeen
involved with initiatives related to Majuli for the last several years.Based on
the experience we feel that there should be equal and parallel effortlocally at
Majuli. On the other hand , about Govt of India , notwithstanding Uma Bharti ,
thereis always lack of sincere effort , if Delhi will ever understand Assam.
Assam Foundation of North America ( AFNA) , On 17th October marked the
celebration of “Jadav Payeng TreePlanting Ceremony” at , the township of
Bridgewater near New York. The news ofthis tree plantation initiative inspired
Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva toorganize ‘Majuli Friendship Day’ at Nagaon
on 3rd January 2016. TheSociety will felicitate environmentalist Jadav Payeng
in this event.
Wahid da, in hisvarious communications had informed about individual efforts
including the cost-effective method of vetiver plantationby Santanu
Bhattacharyya and Greening the Brahmaputra sand bar - asolution to erosion
problem by Dr. Prashanta Bordoloi. We are fortunate to have such dedicated and
committed individuals.
There will be presentation and interaction by Mr. Bhattacharyya andDr.
Bordoloi at the Nagaon event. Dr Anupam Sarma of World Wildlife Fund andclimate
expert Rituraj Phukan will alsobe attending the event , among others. The
Majuli Friendship Day is coordinated by Dr Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti. It is an
auspicious beginning , we hopeto continue the interaction throughout 2016 and
beyond.

"In her presentation, Dr. Rituparana Sarma reveals that, because of relentless
erosionover the decades, Majuli is reduced from 1256 km2in 1891 to 925 km2 in
1971, and then to577 km2 in 1998. The river island now measures about 421 km2
with the serious implicationthat the river island will be completely
annihilated by the mighty river in about five decadesif that trend of
destruction continues. Majuli is the largest fluvial island only in India and
notin the world, as people commonly portray. This proud place of being the
largest fluvial islandin the world goes to Bananal Island in Central Brazil.
[This island, measuring 19,162 km2, isformed from the bisection of the river
Araguaia in the Tocantins State of Brazil]. But theimportance of Majuli in
terms of cultural heritage cannot be underestimated; and urgentsteps must be
taken to save Majuli from total annihilation. After the great earthquake in
1950, flood and erosion problems became relatively moreacute because of
geological changes. The Government of Assam in the 1950’s and 1960’s tookad hoc
measures without any scientific research. It is realised now that the
engineeringdecision in 1965-66 to close the Kherkatia Suti (a course of the
river Brahmaputra) was suicidalto the island. Consequentially, the forceful
diversion of excess discharge to the main river course engulfed a large
landmass (almost 200 km2) on the south-west bank of lower Majuli.To mitigate
that disaster, another blunder was committed. It was the closure of the river
Tuniat the tail end in 2003. This led to a lot of public suffering. The
Brahmaputra Board proposed a Master Plan in 1996 and, only in 2003, after 7
yearscame up with a detailed plan, involving Rs.96.56 crore, to be completed in
three phases by2006-07. The Board miserably failed to implement the projects of
the Plan. This is a sadexample of poor governance. The erosion of Majuli is
still going on unabated."
In this context,may I also add that AFGB has met Uma Bharti last January, and
we are very pleased that actions have been currently taken. Uma Bharti is very
keen, and I expect that proper actions will be taken to save Majuli, beginning
with the creation of NEBRRA.

I suspect what complicates measurement a bit is that Majuli is not a single
land mass. It has a mainland – where the most of the places we associate with
Majuli, the Xatras, government departments etc are -- and a large number of
chars and chaporis. Officially the island has 34 chaporis. Some these chaporis
are connected to the mainland during the dry months , but others are
permanently separated.

Assamese we proudly say that Majuli is the biggest
