NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Tuesday asked the
Narendra Modi government in Gujarat to ensure the safety of the lives,
properties and dignity of all the people but said the Muslims were still
not "repentant" for the Godhra carnage and their lack of unequivocal
condemnation of the incident.
Addressing the BJP parliamentary party meeting, he said now that the
responsibility of the governance was with BJP both in the state and in the
Centre, it had to carry along all including those who opposed it in the
Assembly polls.
"Why didn't many people of Muslim community condemn the Godhra incident?
Even today, there is no repentance....that we committed a mistake or that
this should not have happened and that it was a crime," Vajpayee said.
"But we have to live together. Now, we have to take the responsibility to
keep everyone together. We have got majority and we are in power (in
Gujarat). We are also in power at the Centre. We have to protect the life,
property and dignity of all and build a nation without any discrimination,"
he said.
Vajpayee advised Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to make a new
beginning by carrying along even all those who opposed the BJP.
He said Gujarat election results showed that people do not want Congress
but asked his partymen not to be overconfident and work towards the party's
success in the coming Assembly polls in ten states.
