Troops hunt sick deer, resentment in Ramfalbeel

>From our Correspondent
KOKRAJHAR, March 10: A great deal of sensation
prevails at Ramfalbeel, near here, following the
killing of a deer, this time, not by poachers, but by
gun-totting uniformed men today. The troops of the
16th Sikh Light Infantry, stationed at Patgaon under
Serfanguri police station in Kokrajhar district, shot
dead Rani, a female deer which had been brought up by
the Ramfalbeel Anchalik Committee of the ABSU with
care, following an earlier injury. The deer was
grazing near the roadside at Ramfalbeel, when the
incident happened.

Soon after killing the deer, the Armymen took it
forcibly to their camp. Since the unusual killing took
place near Ramfalbeel HS School, an HSLC examination
venue, the examination was disrupted for half-an-hour
as the students started making a hue and cry.

A case has been registered against the Army at
Serfanguri police station. Kokrajhar SP VK Ramisetty,
while confirming the incident, said that despite
request by the police, the Army has not returned the
body of the deer yet. He said that the police would
take action against the concerned Army personnel.

Meanwhile, the Ramfalbeel ABSU unit, while condemning
the Army action, demanded the immediate return of
Ranis body so that they could cremate it. A number of
NGOs have condemned the incident.
