GUWAHATI, March 11: Most of the CBI cases in the North-east have been
pending due to insurgency problems in the region, said CBI Director P.C.
Sharma while talking to newspersons here today. According to Mr Sharma, a
IPS officer of the Assam cadre, nearly 100 cases are referred to the CBI
from the North-east every year and most of these cases remain pending.
Replying to a question, Mr Sharma said that the Interpol had issued Red
Corner Notice to Paresh Barua, ULFA's self-styled commander-in-chief. When
asked regarding the present position of the Interpol notice, Mr Sharma said
that he is not aware of it.

Replying to a question as to whether there is any political interference on
the CBI investigations in Assam, Mr Sharma said there was none. The Central
Vigilance Commission (CBC) assists the CBI, it does not hamper in its
investigative functions, added Mr Sharma. He further stressed on
strengthening the CBI network in the North-east.

Referring to cyber crime which are on the rise nowadays, he said that for
the solution of the problem in the North-east, a discussion with the DGP
(Assam) was held yesterday and a plan was undertaken to provide training to
the Assam Police through a capsule programme. The proficiency of the CBI is
of a world standard, but the department is technically backward in this
region, he added.

According to the CBI Director, the department take cases when they are
referred to by the concerned states. The CBI rejects different cases mainly
for two reasons. First, if the case is not of international and inter-State
nature, and secondly, if there is scope of handling of the case by the
State Police. If the infrastructure of CBI were satisfactory enough, the
agency is always willing to help people, he added. On the extradition of
underworld don, Abu Salem, the CBI Director replied that Portugal will work
on its own cases first, then only it will act upon it and extradite him to
India.

Referring to Dawood Ibrahim, he said that Pakistan is not cooperating with
the Interpol for which his arrest or extradition could not take place.
Corruption has become an organized crime and many educated and professional
people are being involved in corruption for which the task of investigation
is becoming more difficult, said Mr Sharma.
