GU library declared as centre for manuscript research

GUWAHATI, Aug 12:
The National Manuscript Commission of the Department of Culture, Government of India, has declared the manuscript division of the KK Handique Library of Gauhati University as a Manuscript Research Centre for the preservation and conservation of the library books.

Addressing the 12th Conference and Seminar-cum-Librarians’ Day of the Assam Library Association in the city today, the chief guest Dr GN Talukdar, Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University, said that the library of Gauhati University is among the 24 libraries countrywide those have manuscript research centres.

Dr Talukdar said that the University Grants Commission has recently advanced grants for 25 Info-net centres throughout India including the GU library. Bangalore is the main hub of the info-net. Through this network, all the libraries will be connected through internet and people can avail benefit from it. Remembering the father of library sciences in the country, SR Ranganathan, he stressed on the necessity and importance of library in the society. According to him, the library movement in Assam is not strong in spite of the hundreds of libraries in the villages, sub-divisions and the districts in the State.

The Department of Library and Information Science, Gauhati University, has awarded Rs 1,001 each to the toppers of MLISc and BLISc classes during the year 2002 on the occasion.
