GUWAHATI, Oct 2 (UNI): Concerned over various issues of Assam the NRIs living in UK have formed Assam Forum at London last week with the objective to address the social and economic conditions in Assam.

According to Assam Forum’s communique, the Forum would like to liaise with entire Assamese community in the UK in cases of big crises in Assam.

Further they want to set up a phone tree to be able to do tele-conferences. While maintaining neutrality and transparency in all issues of Assam.

The Forum activities will be based on a totally democratic process and the Forum membership is open to entire Assamese community and individuals who have interest in Assam.

The first meetings of the Assam Forum was held at middle part of September on the same day as a first venture, the Forum endorsed the report tabled by Tarun Chowdhury targeting various burning issues of Assam.

The report expressed deep concern at the Government of Assam’s present precarious economic condition. If this condition is allowed to continue unabated, this may lead to total chaos in Assam. The Forum suggested that Guwahati, being the prime city as such the gateway to eastern-most states of India, deserves special attention.

They suggested disbanding of the Brahmaputra Flood Control Board. The Brahmaputra Flood Control Board, which was formed in 1980 in Delhi, later shifted to Guwahati in 1982 is outdated and behind time. The people of Assam have not seen anything visibly apparent measures taken by them. It should be dismantled and a new flood control board should form with maximum number of common citizens in it.
