Is this a slow replacement of the SC/ST reservation system or is it in addition to the
SC/ST system to be perpetuated alongside? Anybody knows?
Also how does one define a "class" of EB people? Is it same as economically backward
area?

Reservation for EBCs politically motivated: OppositionPress Trust of India
New Delhi, October 4
Describing the Union Cabinet decision to provide reservation for economically backward
classes (EBCs) as "politically motivated", Opposition parties on Saturday favoured
wider consultations on the issue with the Congress indicating its support to the move.

"Our feeling is that this decision has been delayed.... This decision was motivated by
election expediency. The Prime Minister during his visit to Rajasthan a few months ago
had promised to bring a Constitution Amendment Bill in Monsoon session itself in this
regard. Had this proposal been introduced then, Congress was ready to support it,"
Party spokesman S Jaipal Reddy said.

Terming the move as an "unfiltered electoral gimmick", CPI(M) said its timing exposed
the "insincerity and opportunism" of the Government.

"This issue has been under discussion since the Mandal Commission days ....The
Vajpayee Government refused to act all these years," the party Polit Bureau said,
adding, however, the decision merited consideration.

Asking the Government to initiate a national consultation process on the matter, it
said, "With growing unemployment and privatisation, reservations have little meaning
left."

Welcoming the Cabinet decision, BJP spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the decision
was "historic" and "true to the spirit of social justice and empowerment."

It had been the party's long-pending demand for giving reservation to people belonging
to the economically backward classes, he added.
