Jugal:
Congratualtions!!!
That is a very beautiful English translation of a beautiful Assamese short
story by Mahim Bora, one of the prominent and successful Assamese short
story writers of the modern age. The short story "Key^a Ag^li" depicts a
scene from the rural Assamese society rather of the old age; how blind
beliefs and faiths used to control the village lives (or may still do in
some parts). Bora showed how a small thing like a minor deformation of a
finger of the bride's foot can make her and that of the entire family
miserable beyond belief, how the villagers used to be affected by comments
from higher ups, how the whole scene seem so meaningless from the eyes of
the modern enlightened age, but how real it was at some point of time. The
story was made even more beutiful with a O.Henry like twist at the end by
the sudden discovery of the deformation of the 'keya anguli' of the Madam
Mauzadar. BTW Mihim Bora's another famous story is titled 'Twp'. If you have
not translated it yet, that is a hint.

Jugal. You make beutiful translations. I simply wish that you keep it up,
and one day you will surprise all of us with the publication of an anthology
of 'Assamese Short Stories'.

Wish you best of luck.

Thanks

Rajen Barua
