Yes! indeed it does. From my experiences, I am proud
to say that as far as catseism is concerned, the
Assamese have traditionally dealt with it much better
than most other groups in India. In certain parts of
UP or Bihar, inter-caste marriages are just unheard of
(much less attempted). Most Assamese have (I think)
taken such situations in their stride. The
acceptability factor for such narriages in Assam is
much better tahn many other places in India.

The other touchy thing I did want to bring out is,
when ever this topic comes out, I there is a certain
tendency for it to be more of an anti-baamun. That
would have been the case say 50 or so years ago. But
today, anyyone who plays one caste against the other
is the problem. So we shouldn't single out one caste
or the other. Would appreciate more discussion on this
angle.
