Not being a subscriber to ridicule and sarcasm and having played Kabaddi in my childhood, I googled and found the following news that gives a glimpse from quarter final on (go to the bottom of the news item). There were several countries other than India and Iran that took part.
I am glad to see that India organized an international competition in a sport that is not only indigenous but also is fun. The downside is - just like field hockey, now that so many nations are taking part India's lead will not last long. :-)

I think Rajen Barua will have some comment on this event. We chatted on the subject of indigenous sports at a gathering in Houston. Barua, have you been following the discussion in the net?

MUMBAI: Iran's fairytale in the World Cup kabaddi championship ended rather rudely.

India weathered the power game of the giant killers of this novel event with cool calculated play to win the final by 55-27 after leading 27-12 at half time.

They had four lonas (Iran all out four times) and 11 bonus points. India were vociferously egged on by 3,000 spectators while the Iranians had some consular staff and their families rooting for them at the Bharatiya Krida Mandir, Wadala.

Kabaddi is not about brawn. It is about tactics which India keeps fine tuning inspite of being at the top with Pakistan and Bangladesh in close pursuit. This team had four camps! and coach Balwan Singh emphasised the hard work at these camps.

Indians kept control of the game. Iran didn't know when to go for the attack and tackle. This indiscretion, born from inexperience, caused them to concede negative points which added up. And yet Indian star of yesteryears, Shekhar Shetty, saw a positive side to it. "Remove those bonus points and you see Iran have not been disgraced."

Maharashtra lad Shailesh Sawant was adjudged man-of-the match and India's skipper Sanjeeva Kumar was adjudged man-of-the series. "I was best raider at the nationals on this ground and it has happy memories," said the skipper from Railways. His forte is fine footwork and raiding and he had 16 raids, 12 points and 5 bonus.

The tall Manpreet, Sing, using his reach, was the second best with ten raids, 3 points and 3 bonus. Vikas, who came after the break, made a big difference, covering the corners with success to swell the lead. He caught four in a row.

Ira! n's Behzad, who was the star of the shock win over Bangladesh last evening, was a flop - 13 raids, 3 pts and 2 bonus. Another star, Ghulamreza was also below par with 7 raids 24 points and was caught twice. The dazzling raider Hadi was injured and caught once.

Towards the end of the match, the Iran coach complained about Indians having oil on their bodies and being slippery. It was rubbished by the Indian coach but it showed that Iranians don't like to lose.

When they get the hang of the finer points the Iranians will be more than a handful. Till then India can bask in World Cup glory and celebrate the Rs 2 lakhs they won. Iran got Rs 1.25 lakhs from Shiv Sena MP Mohan Rawle.

Results: Semifinals: India bt Bangladesh 39-19 (HT 12-5). Iran bt Canada 54-28 (HT:31-9). Quarterfinals: Bangladesh bt Japan 33-24 (12-11), Canada bt United Kingdom 66-28 (32-11).
