If the NE region has been so neglected and given a step-motherly treatment (as many netters claim), then how is it that the OTHER NE states are even beating the more advanced states, while Assam lags behind?

NEW DELHI, March 18 – The growth rate of Assam’s economy has been ranked 21st among 32 States in the country, while two north-eastern States of Nagaland and Mizoram were the country’s two top-ranking States. The growth of Gross State Domestic Products (GSDP) of Assam has gone down from 16.9 percent in 1990-1991 to 9.8 percent in 2003-2004. The GSDP has improved from all-time low of 7.6 recorded in 2000-2001, according to report of Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) tabled in a written reply by Minister of State for Finance, SS Palanimanickam.

Contrary to perception about the dismal growth of economy in the region, five States of Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim Tripura and Meghalaya have been counted among 10 fastest growing States in the country. The GSDP of Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya were recorded as 44.4 percent, 25.6 and 13.3 percent, respectively, in 2000-2001, among the highest in the country.

Meanwhile, Assam has been allocated a whopping Rs 24,329.40 crore as award by the Twelfth Finance Commission, the Union Finance Minister said in a separate written reply.

While Assam’s share in the Central Taxes and duties have been estimated at Rs 19,850.69 crore (2005-2010), it has been earmarked Rs 767.89 crore for calamity relief.

The TFC has recommended a total estimated transfer of Rs 613,112,112.02 crore to States as share in the net proceeds of all sharable Union taxes and duties and has recommended grants amounting to Rs 142,639.60 crore.
