Umesh-Ji: Since you brought this up, let me put forward my observations about the customs of the society that we live in.

Though there are many myths that girls here are "easy", actually most of them are not. They hold their own, and won't tolerate if their comfort zone is infringed upon.

People in this country are even careful in passing innocuous comments at work, like "you look good today", "you're wearing a good tie today", etc., especially between the sexes. While hugging is a very common way of greeting people here, at the same time, there are different type of hugs. And women can usually pick up the "intention" of a hug.

So, girls that hug boys are not necessarily any different than the girls that shake hands. A hug is an informal way of greeting and a hand-shake is a formal one.

Many American women are very conscious about their private space - so even though usually they are free in other respects, they will find it very difficult to ride in a crowded bus, for example, while it may not be a big deal for others - not because of the physical discomfort of standing etc., but because people are standing too close to them - basically 'coz the private space has been infringed.

People can have good and caring friends (male or female), who would give all their support if they are treated with care and respect.

These are just some general comments.

Good luck to you.

- ABS.
