I wonder if it is like Marie Antoniette asking the hungry to eat acke when they demand bread.

Hi,

I just attended a presentation by a famous Indian management professor at Michigan Univ. (Harvard MBA)C.K. Prahlad at HBS campus - my first visit there for work. Topic seemed to be of our interest : Marketing and International Development.

However, he spoke of new ways of doing business in poor nations housing 5 billion of world population.

One of his case studies was a software developed by India's top Software manufacturer (of Parsee -Persian faith)which - he claimed to teach an adult how to read in 3 hours.

Only read -and not all 3 Rs (Reading, Writing and Arithmetic).

Working in 6 Indian languages, now they are exporting it to Africa. They are also developing the African language grammar (for those for whom there is no grammar)as they modify the software for that. Trick seems to be based of better cognition etc and no need of teacher.

Need one million PCs (Pentium 1 or 2 - outdated ones) to make 90% India
literate in 3 years.

Weblinks I found were:

http://www.islamonline.net/English/Science/2003/09/article07.shtml
http://www.tata.com/tcs/articles/20020531_community_initiative.htm
http://www.expresscomputeronline.com/20030901/indiacomputes01.shtml

As always the problem would be availability of time for these poor adults and of electricity and computers etc in rural areas (and Air conditioned environs).

Any strategies?

Umesh
