Chandan:
Yes you are right. My response was a bit sarcastic.
But my sarcasm was not on the contents of your response to Umesh but on the tone
of your response.
Come on. Do you really have to attack poor Umesh
with those words. Why? Why don't you just say why Florida does not resemble
Assam, and why he is wrong. End of matter. Why try to bit the poor guy to
death and digress.? Did he do a terrible crime? . Frankly speaking I don't know
why Florida does or does not resemble Assam, but sure can find out from
internet. But looks like you know for sure. In that case just say it and end the
issue. I am sure Umesh will not oppose your statement.

Tumi kothatw olop thatta kori kola jen lagise dei.
Something tells me you were being sarcastic about the comment.
But that would not help all the others who are unaware of the climatic
and/or geological conditions of Florida, like Anjan for example. Or for that
matter Umesh ,even though he is at Harvard and thus might have decided
that he knows all about the US that he needs to know to compare Assam and
Florida's climatic and/or soil conditions.
They will keep thinking that Rajen Barua - a long time US resident and
highly trained and accomplished petroleum Engineer's--sarcasm might mean that
he knows something differently from Sondon - the 'sob-janta' (
omniscient)-wanna-be.
Wouldn't you do them a favor and educate them by sharing what you know
differently , instead of leaving an impression, like one of our erstwhile
Kamrupi linguists here in Assam net used to do: never explain but leave an
impression that he knows the deep dark truths while those he cast aspersions
on don't ?
I know you mean well. So help educate everyone. It will be 'aairw
barta-gongarw jatra'--kill two birds at one shot: Prove your point and give
Sondon the 'sunga-sai-xwpa'( tit-for-tat), by demonstrating to the
desi-patriots that he doesn't know his whatsmacallit from a hole in the
ground?

Florida climatic and soil conditions are NOTHING like
Assam's.
Only a highly geographically challenged person would
even attempt to compare the two. It reminds me of the story of the group
of blind people attempting to describe an elephant by feel. Much like NRA
experts in Assam Net attempting to pass judgement on everything from
linguistics to religion to philosophy to civil engineering to democratic
governance.

Umesh,
When you mention Florida, Ananta
Nath comes to mind. He is a Civil Engineer and maybe he can chip
in with his expertise.
Ananta, are you reading all
this.

Anjan-da,
It seems it all boils to down to expertise in the field
of road construction - proven expertise. Why not get Assamese youth
to get expertise in developed nations - in civil engg - thru
sponsorships or sholarships? Most likely they may not come back to
Assam after graduation -- but they would have expertise - which
could be utilized.
I'd like to see Assamese at Harvard Grad. School of
Education and Harvard's Kennedy School of Govt --so that some youth
not only develop expertise but also connections.
Delhi-walas treat all states equally bad - except
perhaps UP and Punjab. How do you think Delhi-wlas behave when thry
visit Rajasthan or MP -- I think with same disdain as when visiting
Assam - I am talking not only of politicians or bureaucrats but even
ordianry folks from "Grand Delhi."
The only way to break their strangle hold over public
projects - is to have "branded expertise" way above what
Delhi-walahs have. Delhi-walahs salute US univ. degrees - behold
their fauning to Cambridge Univ and Harvard drop-outs (Rajiv-Sonia
& Rahul Gandhi family) even.
Climate of Assam resembles many parts of developed world
- we ould learn how they are managing the situation - given the
special demands of climate - rain and flodds etc - Florida
comes to my mind. US based retired folks could turn their attention
in this direction (or those active in the field).
My humble submission.

Chan, Take heart man, things are going right and
all is well with the roads in Guwahati, at least.
I
suppose some of us are not aware that the major roads of Guwahati
are now being maintained by a private company and that the
money is disbursed directly from Central funds. Only the
smaller roads and "municipal" roads are now "supposedly" looked
after by the PWD (People With Disabilities). So, in a way,
Rajasthan has come to Assam.
Again, the stretch of the
National Highway that runs from the Beltola area to Jhalukbari
(10 km or so) has been constructed by an "outside" construction
company under NHI specifications and it is standing up to
the test of the Assamese soil and rain (so far at least). I
would have liked to see the road elevated slightly more, but
then ... who am I to question it.
Remember the time when
the ! ! PWD went into throes over this issue and the
PWD Minister and Secretary PWD announced in the Legislative
Assembly that the Assam PWD was fully capable of "road
construction" and disbursing the Rs 1,000 cr allocated for the
purpose. There were so many "letters to the
editors" of the various newspapers laughing at the PWD
that they did not dare protest any further as the contract went
out to the "foreigners" with "proven track records."
No,
you are not wrong in thinking in that vein. It is actually
happening. Now we can call bandhs, blow up a few bridges,
disrupt public life, and say that Delhi treats us in a
step-motherly fashion. Or what next?
