I had mentioned that I had donated blood for the first and the last time in India in July 2004 (for my poisoned cousin).

Hi,

I went to donate blood at the drive organized for the students. I read the 10 page manual of American Red Cross, which excluded all sorts of people but somehow I was eligible. Then I mentioned that I am from India and that I had come here seven months ago. That was it - I come from a country where Malaria is endemic (never mind I am from a desert) so I cannot donate - unless I have never been to India for atleast 3 years. So I think all tropical country folks cannot give blood in USA.

Their website is: http://www.redcross.org/services/biomed/0,1082,0_557_,00.html

Even those who have visited these countries in the past 3 years cannot donate.

Sub Saharan Afica country folks cannot donate because of AIDS fear. EU countries inlc Turkey cannot donate if they had ever stayed there (since 1977) for more than 3 months because of Mad cow disease.

I think Andrea S. knew about this, because she mentioned this in class today that she cannot, that her blood too is not considered good enough -so it goes for most nations in the world I think.

Gays, prostitutes, accupuncturists cannot donate blood either. Neither can those who had engaged in risky behavior - even if the AIDS test is negative. Or those who have had sex with those born or living in AIDS endemic African countries. So it is not considered safe to marry an Africa resident person??

These American Red Cross regulations seem out of this world to me.

What do you think?

Umesh
