I realise that having been brought up among Rajputs in Rajasthan ( till 1947 atleast called Rajputana) has made me too keenly aware of caste bias.
A non-Bania caste Rajasthani is not considered sharp in business in Jaipur and elsewhere (though he be an MBA from Harvard -I am stretching it a bit), unless he or she is a Punjabi or Sindhi.
A non-Rajput is not considered warrior-like enough though he be in the army or police - things are chaning ofcourse. Non-rajputs cannot (could not) have title "Singh" (lion) in Rajputana Rifles of Indian Army.
A state whose name itself was based on a particular caste - you can imagine the feudal structure there. So perhaps has been my experience in Haryana or Bihar or UP.
I do not know the societal structure of Assam, so I cannot comment - but I'l be careful to limit my arguments to general populace of Assam.
